What’s special about Bungadoo Breeze?

What’s so special about Bungadoo Breeze? Let me spell it out:

The River for Swimming. It is magnificent. Situated on a slow wide bend of the river, here is where you can find shallow spots for swimming and cooling off from the hot summer heat.  Because we are in the sub-tropics, the water is always a delightful temperature, even in winter. Its current slows around the bend, but can still be challenging when the river rises, for whatever reason, be it rain, run-off, or dam release. Quite often the river is low enough for you to walk across to the sandbanks on the other side, and float back with the current, watching out for snags.

The River for Exploring. Borrow the canoe or kayaks, or bring your own. There is plenty to explore in this river. An early morning paddle will reveal the spectacle that is river life – and give you a great work out too!  Duck into the creek for a rest from the current, pull into a lagoon for a stretch and a swim, paddle upstream to the open expanse of river, where the current is very slow, and the swans protect their territory. Bring drinks and some food for a picnic in perfect peace & privacy.

The River for Lungfish viewing. There are deeper holes for wildlife viewing along the river track at Bungadoo Breeze. Watch out for turtles, water dragons, platypus, and lungfish. Lungfish are quite curious, and when swimming, you will hear them exhale behind you – a puff of air, and then gone. If you are kayaking, the lungfish may slap into the side of your kayak – you are in their territory! The lungfish are plentiful and can grow very large, living a long time. They have legs and an orange mouth. One of our last dinosaurs, protected, and only found in the waters of the Burnett and Mary Rivers of Qld.

The River for Platypus viewing.  We have a resident platypus female, who has a burrow right on the banks at Bunggadoo Breeze. She breeds every year, so we often see 3 platypus babies around Christmas time, in the area where the kayaks are parked.  We used to fish in the river until we caught a baby platypus.  So many platypi indicate a very healthy river.

The River for Privacy.  These days it’s hard to find a bit of solitude and privacy. Everywhere there are crowds. Feel like a swim? So does everyone else! Here is where you will get your peace and privacy.  No motorboats or jet skies here. No public access to this part of the river. There are only 5 campsites, one cabin, and 20 acres to find your happy place. No crowds here!

The River for Birdlife.  Pelicans, Cormorants, Eagles, Swans, ducks – just a few you are likely to spot. Walking the gullies of Bungadoo Breeze is a bird photographer’s paradise. Many rare and spectacular birds live in the complex vegetation corridors which make up one-third of Bungadoo Breeze.

Night Skies over the River. Many night photographers find their way to Bungadoo Breeze. Aside from a dim glare of distant Bundaberg, the night is a blaze of stars and planets. The milky way can be photographed in all its glory.

Whether you are after some solitude or some river exploring adventures, Bungadoo Breeze may just fit the bill.
